Have your chimney cleaned by a certified chimney sweep at least once a year to ensure it is free of clogs, soot and creosote deposits. This significantly reduces the risk of chimney fires with a fire fighting cost.

If your chimney is cleaned by a certified chimney sweep, the above firefighting costs are usually covered by insurance. Most insurance companies require a chimney cleaning certificate issued by a registered chimney installer. Fires can also wreak havoc on chimneys and homes. Remember, a clean chimney is a safer home.

Recommended Chimney Cleaning Frequency:

  • Chimneys burning Smokeless fuel – once a year
  • Chimneys burning domestic bituminous coal – at least twice a year.
  • Wood burning – every three months when in use.
  • Chimneys with gas appliances – once a year plus checked by a Gas Safe technician.
  • Chimneys with oil appliances – once a year plus checked by an OFTEC technician.

Creosote cleaning stages

  • Creosote is usually a dark brown/black substance that can take many different forms depending on what stage it is in.
  • The first stage is soot deposits that can be brushed off with a regular standard chimney brush.
  • The second stage of creosote usually has a hardened, glossy appearance, also called a glaze, which cannot be removed with a regular chimney brush and may require special instruments.
  • The third stage of creosote is a thicker, tarry consistency and should be avoided. It is very difficult to remove and requires special equipment. When ignited, creosote can burn for days at extreme temperatures and damage chimneys and property. Creosote is highly corrosive and accumulation can significantly reduce the life of a chimney.

Chemical Cleaning

Chemicals are also used to clean chimneys to remove heavy tar and creosote deposits. This will help reduce bad odors coming from the chimney. Left untreated, creosote can cause chimney fires.

A chimney fire burns the resinous part of creosote, leaving behind a soot-like crust. If this shell is not removed after a chimney fire, smoke will seep through it and quickly redeposit fresh liquid resin. Soon, the chimney will be as bad as it was before the fire.
